Choosing the Best Light Tackle Jigging Setup
One of the best parts about light tackle jigging is that you do not need giant offshore gear to catch quality fish. Using the right rod, reel, and line setup makes a huge difference when targeting striped bass, rockfish, and bull redfish throughout the year.
You are always welcome to bring your own gear on our trips, but we want to make sure your setup matches the fishery and the techniques we are using that day.
Spring, Summer, and Fall Striped Bass Setup
For Chesapeake Bay striped bass and schoolie rockfish, a medium-power spinning rod is the ideal all-around setup. Most anglers prefer rods between 6’6” and 8’ depending on casting style and personal preference.
A light, sensitive rod with a fast or extra-fast tip is important for light tackle fishing because it helps detect subtle bites while still giving enough backbone to handle larger fish around structure and current.
Recommended Setup:
Medium-power spinning rod
Fast or extra-fast action
6’6”–8’ rod length
2500–3000 size spinning reel
8–15lb braided line
20–30lb fluorocarbon or monofilament leader
This setup keeps things lightweight and comfortable for long days of casting and jigging while still giving you plenty of drag and line capacity for bigger striped bass.
Winter Trophy Striped Bass Setup
Winter trophy striped bass fishing usually requires heavier jig heads and larger soft plastics, so stepping up to a slightly heavier setup helps improve control and hooksets.
For trophy rockfish, we recommend a medium-heavy rod with a fast or extra-fast tip to maintain sensitivity while handling heavier lures and larger fish.
Recommended Setup:
Medium-heavy spinning rod
Fast or extra-fast action
3000–5000 size spinning reel
15–30lb braided line
This gives anglers the power needed to fish deeper water, heavier current, and larger baits while still keeping the advantages of a light tackle jigging setup.
Summer Bull Redfish Setup
Bull redfish are a completely different animal. These fish pull extremely hard and demand stronger tackle to fight them efficiently and safely.
For big redfish, we recommend a quality medium-heavy or heavy rod with plenty of backbone to turn fish quickly and reduce fight times, especially during warmer summer water temperatures.
Recommended Setup:
Medium-heavy or heavy spinning rod
5000 size reel or larger
25–35lb braided line
A heavier setup allows anglers to apply more drag pressure and land these powerful fish quickly before releasing them healthy.
Bringing Your Own Gear
If you would like to bring your own rod and reel on your charter, feel free to send us your setup before the trip. We are happy to let you know if your gear will work well for the type of light tackle jigging and fishing conditions we expect that day.
Having the right setup can make a huge difference when targeting Chesapeake Bay striped bass, rockfish, and bull redfish on light tackle.
