Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to fish for striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay?
Year-round. There’s always something to do and something to catch—it just changes with the season. Spring brings great topwater action for striped bass. Summer offers bull redfish, bluefish, and cobia. Fall brings aggressive striped bass feeding heavily before winter. Winter is trophy-class catch-and-release fishing for migratory striped bass.
What’s the difference between spring and fall striped bass fishing?
Spring is focused on shallow structure along shorelines, targeting fish with small soft plastics, topwater plugs and jerk baits. Fall is more about chasing actively feeding fish in open water, often with breaking fish and birds working over deeper water. Both seasons produce quality fish, but the approach is very different.
How does light tackle fishing work for striped bass?
We’re casting lures on spinning gear—no trolling. It’s a much more hands-on way to fish, and you feel everything from the hit to the fight. Way more fun than dragging baits around, especially when you’re throwing topwater or plastics.
Can you catch striped bass in winter in Maryland?
Yes, In December, migratory striped bass make their way into the Chesapeake Bay to spawn in the spring. This is the time to get a shot at a trophy fish. These migratory fish are typically 35-50 inches, much larger than our resident “schoolies”.
What are bull redfish and when can you catch them?
Bull reds (red drum) are big, hard-fighting fish—usually 30–50+ inches. We target them in the summer when they move into the Bay. When they’re around, it’s one of the best fights you’ll get out here.
What's a walk-on fishing charter?
That’s a shared trip—you’re booking a spot instead of the whole boat. Good option if you’re by yourself or only have a couple guys and don’t want to pay for a private charter.
Is fly fishing effective for striped bass in the Chesapeake?
It can be, especially when fish are shallow and feeding, or breaking near the surface in the fall. That said, conditions have to line up right. Most of our trips are spinning gear, but fly guys can definitely get it done when the bite is right.
How long do summer bull red fishing trips last?
8 hours. These fish move around a lot, so the extra time helps us stay on them and gives you a better shot at a big one.
What makes fall striped bass fishing different from other seasons?
Fish are feeding hard and moving in bigger groups. When you find them, it can be fast action. It’s one of the most consistent times of year to get on a good bite.
Can beginners learn fishing techniques on guided charters?
Absolutely. Most people we take out aren’t experts. We’ll show you how to cast, work lures, and fight fish the right way. No experience needed. Let us know your skill level before a trip.
What species can you target year-round on light tackle charters?
Striped bass is the main target year-round. In the summer, we also get chances at bull reds, speckled trout, bluefish, cobia and other species depending on conditions.
Are private group charters customizable for families?
Yes—if you book the whole boat, we can tailor the trip. Whether you want to focus on topwater, bigger fish, or just bend rods, we’ll adjust based on what you’re looking for and what the fish are doing.
